A few of my favorite things

Just in case you have been looking for that perfect gift for the holidays, I’ve compiled a small list of some of my favorite things. The list is confined to things I actually own and love to pieces!

1. Blooming teas from the Dragon Tea House - perfect for a long day of editing. One bloom is good for a whole pot of tea!

2. Bags and tees from Deadworry - April is super sweet and churns out incredible work. I have a special-order messenger bag from the shop that has lasted forever and looks incredible!

3. Fantastic handmade Jewelry by Thea. Shawn gave me some earrings by Thea the month before we were married, and also for our anniversary this past year. I have never met her, but I kinda feel like she is part of the family!

4. Photojojo the book – am giving these out as thank you gifts this year and ordered an extra for myself. FUN!

5. Threadless Tees- “Spaghetti and Me” design shown- it’s my favorite Tee in my drawer.

6. Peepee Teepees from MySunshine- because every little boy needs something awesome to pee on.

Turkey for me, Turkey for you.

I am Thankful for all the Turkeys in my life. You know who you are.

I am Thankful for an incredible, closely-knit immediate and extended family.

I am Thankful for an unfathomable God.

I am Thankful for a super hot and awesome husband…. who is just right in every way.

I am Thankful for the patented Melton Humor, passed down from generation to generation.

…and I leave you with a Thanksgiving wish from a famous modern musician:

Turkey for me
Turkey for you
Let’s eat the turkey
In my big brown shoe

Turkey lurkey doo and
Turkey lurkey dap
I eat that turkey
Then I take a nap.

Lynsey wins!

Congrats to Lynsey, the first comment contest winner! Next one is coming up soon (they will pop up every other week or so and the contest itself lasts for a week). If last time is any indication, you have an extremely good chance of winning if you participate. See you next time!

Carrie + Kyle : Saint Peters, MO

Carrie and Kyle had a wonderful wedding day with little stress and lots of joy.

She had two layers of visual security going on here before her moment to enter the chapel- layer one: Dad. Layer two: a big wooden door. Nice catch, Steve!

The flower girl was just precious, and a little shy to boot.

The ringbearer brothers were a hit. One was happy to be there, and one was not so much.

Carrie was a dazzler!

They both did P90-X to train for the day. It paid off! Carrie may be a feather, but that is some serious dress to be swinging around.

Info Corner: Flashes

Every now and then I’ll get a camera question in my email box (ugphoto@gmail.com) from a client or friend and think, “Huh! I wish I would have known that when starting out!” Just such a question came in today from Ryan:

Hey Michelle.  I’m getting closer to buying a flash for my camera, and maybe upgrading my camera body too.  What kind of flash do you use? What do you suggest?  Would you suggest a normal flash that goes on the camera, or that can be used off-camera with a receiver?  And what do those flash rings do that a normal flash doesn’t?  As you can see I’m a little lost!
Ryan,
You have a Canon, right? Ring flashes (like this one and this one) are specialty deals that are made for Macro shots but can be used for portraits for an interesting look (many of the Mary Ellen Matthews SNL portraits in the past 8-10 years have been done with a ring flash as part of the setup). A normal on camera flash can be used off camera with Pocketwizards or generic copies of PWs (very nice and portable!). I’d recommend a 430580 if you can swing the $$.
Both can be used off camera and have the nice swivel head so you can ‘foof‘ the flash.  Hope that answers your question!

The Moments of Kayla’s Wedding Day

Kayla bubbles with excitement getting into her handmade dress the morning of her wedding day…

It was a hoot to watch them during the service (@ Saint Francis Xavier). One moment they would be exchanging coy glances and private comments…..

…and the next moment emotion would wash over the sanctuary.

So pretty!

I love this cake from Russo’s- it was made to match the bridesmaid dresses.

Grabbit!

The endpoint image of Kayla’s album- such a striking beauty she is!

Check back soon- the next post will showcase Kayla’s wedding details and tell you how you can get them too… plus a contest for a $10 Sephora e-gift certificate!

Q+A with Kayla!

1. How did your husband pop the question?

Tony made reservations at The Boathouse. After we were finished eating he picked up a cooler he had secretly packed with glasses and a bottle of champagne. We headed for the row boats!! We were told there was only one boat left, but it had been reserved. The gentleman begin explaining how he didn’t understand how one could be reserved they never allow people to reserve the row boats. After going on and on, Tony informed the gentleman he was the one that had reserved the boat. After rowing us out to the middle, among all the beautiful fountains, Tony began reading me a long letter. (I was sobbing after the first couple of pages.)  He gracefully got down on one knee in the boat and asked me to marry him.  I was crying even harder by this point and unable to catch my breath (like a small child), I managed to say the word “yes!”.  He placed the ring on my finger and shortly after we noticed the applauding audience on a park bench nearby!

Michelle’s note: Kayla and Tony had a great idea of doing the engagement session at the place they got engaged. See here!

2. How far in advance did you start planning?

I started planning right away. We were engaged on July 26th 2008 and married July 18th 2009-so about a year in advance.

3. Where (if anywhere) did you go on your honeymoon?  Maui, Hawaii for 10 days
4. What elements of your wedding were DIY (if any)? Programs, all decorations (i.e. ceremony and reception), fairy wands, flower girl’s flower ball, ring bearer pillow, and unity candle (‘R’ in diamonds).

Michelle’s note: Kayla had lots of lovely little girls in her wedding. They all couldn’t be flower girls, so she invented a new position for them: Fairies! They all got DIY fairy wands to wave down the aisle.

5. What about your wedding caught you by surprise? How soon the reception was over!
6. Now that you are a wedding planning veteran, would you change anything if you had to do it all over again? I wouldn’t have changed a thing!
7. Describe the moment you remember most fondly from your wedding day.  Oh, there are so many! But the moment that makes me feel warm and cozy inside is when the doors opened to walk down the aisle with my mother and there my future husband was waiting for me!

8. List any helpful links/websites/vendors you used during the planning stages.

www.theknot.com, www.undergracephoto.com, www.barijay.com, www.carlsoncraft.com
9. What advice would you give to future brides? Create a binder for yourself! Create sections: “Caterer, Church, Photographer, Videographer, Bachelorette Party, Marriage Prep, etc.  At the back of the binder three hole punch a large envelope-great for keeping receipts!

Thanks Kayla!

Kayla+Tony – Saint Louis, MO

Yummy, yummy wedding style from Kayla. She chose a daring plunging neckline in her handmade dress (made with love by longtime family friend Jeannine Flowers) pinned with a little crystalline brooch. It summed her up perfectly- sweet, light, and just a touch of the unexpected.

The dapper man Tony:

As Kayla and Tony chose not to see each other before the ceremony, we had a Day After session planned in Bee Tree Park. It was lightly sprinkling and beautiful. Kayla had wanted a locale that was a little bit romantic and a lot fairy tale- and I think this was it!

Having a Day After session allowed us to get gorgeous imagery without worrying about keeping hungry guests waiting or being late to the church! I loved it!

My favorite from the session. Very sweet and classic.

Stay tuned for more of Kayla and Tony! I’ll be posting a guest interview with Kayla and showcasing more details and moments from the wedding day soon.
